Marlin fishing in Cabo San Lucas

CABO SAN LUCAS FISHING FORECAST FOR SPRING, 2012The end of winter brings us hopes of warmer water and a lessening of winds that can come about in Southern Baja from December through February. With it, we usually begin to see an increase in billfish populations moving into our waters. With water temps ranging from the high 60's to low to mid 70's, we're seeing more life on the Pacific side of the cape with decent shots at striped marlin for anglers soaking live baits 80-120 feet below the surface. We're also coming across tailing or sleeping striped marlin up on the surface with about a 50/50 shot at getting them to eat a live bait cast in front of them.

This is also the time of year when we can expect to spot swordfish, and if you're lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, they'll surely test your mettle. Swordfish are hard fighting fish with an incredible amount of endurance. Heck, we've had them on the line for hours and hours before getting them boatside with equal numbers of fish lost after anglers fight these powerful critters. But if you're lucky enough to land one, you'll have accomplished a much sought-after feat and have some incredibly tasty tablefare to share with friends and family.

As for other game fish species, tuna and dorado are making their usual appearances but not in huge numbers. Still, a good bite for tuna that are averaging 20-30lbs with larger models to 150+ found associated with schools of porpoise further offshore. Dorado are also being found offshore and have provided decent action for anglers with fish in the 20-30 lb range striking trolled lures, just not in big numbers.

Rockpiles and seamounts are giving up some real nice pargo and cabrilla but you've got to get on those fish fast as their brute strength will have you on the rocks and broken off quick if you can't get their heads turned around. Inshore, the sierra keep up a nice bite with fish up to 8 lbs a fairly common occurence and you can't beat sierra when it comes to making ceviche! All in all, fishing is pretty darned good as we start the spring season.

Looking forward, we expect that April and May are going to bring us billfish in greater numbers and bigger models. May 13th-18th is when the international fishing community comes to Cabo San Lucas for the IGFA Offshore Championship and the reason is the weather is great, the striped marlin make their presence known and wide-open fishing is more the rule than the exception. Now, fishing is fishing so we can never guarantee success everyday you're on the water but if you're looking for comfortably sunny days and beautiful fishing conditions, late spring is a great time to come to Cabo.
